Apple Offers $1 Million To Anyone Who Can Hack Its AI Servers

Apple has developed a Virtual Research Environment to give the public the opportunity to test the security of its Private Cloud Compute (PCC) system. Additionally, they have made the source code for several “key components” available, enabling researchers to examine the system’s privacy and safety features.

In an effort to further enhance the security of the PCC system, Apple has also expanded its security bounty program. The program now offers rewards of up to $1 million for identifying vulnerabilities that could threaten the core security and privacy protections of the platform.

Private Cloud Compute (PCC) powers Apple Intelligence’s most computationally demanding tasks while offering cutting-edge privacy and security. By Apple extending their renowned device security model into the cloud, PCC sets a new standard for secure cloud computing. In a previous post introducing PCC, Apple highlighted their commitment to earning public trust through an unprecedented level of transparency. Apple pledges to allow security and privacy experts to independently verify the end-to-end protections PCC provides. Following the launch of Apple Intelligence and PCC, they have granted early access to third-party auditors and select researchers, equipping them with tools like the PCC Virtual Research Environment (VRE) for this purpose.

Apple is now opening these resources to the public, inviting all security and privacy researchers—and anyone with a technical interest—to explore PCC and conduct their own independent verification. In addition, apple announced that the Apple Security Bounty now includes rewards for identifying vulnerabilities in PCC, with significant prizes for reports related to our privacy and security guarantees.

Security Guide: A Deep Dive into PCC Architecture

To help understand how PCC is designed to meet core security and privacy requirements, Apple published the Private Cloud Compute Security Guide. This comprehensive guide details how the various components of PCC work together to deliver unprecedented privacy for AI processing in the cloud. Topics covered include:

Virtual Research Environment: Tools for Independent Analysis

For the first time, Apple has created a Virtual Research Environment (VRE) for an Apple platform. This set of tools allows you to perform your own security assessments of PCC, directly from a Mac. The VRE operates in a virtual machine, closely mirroring the software environment of a PCC node. It includes:

Apple are also releasing source code for critical components of PCC, allowing for deeper analysis of its security and privacy features.

The projects available for review include:

  • CloudAttestation, which handles PCC node attestations.
  • Thimble, which manages transparency enforcement on user devices.
  • splunkloggingd, a logging daemon designed to protect against accidental data exposure.
  • srd_tools, which powers the VRE tooling, helping researchers explore PCC functionality.

Expanded Apple Security Bounty: Rewards for PCC Vulnerabilities

Apple’s new PCC bounty categories are aligned with the most critical threats as describe in the Security Guide:

  • Remote attack on request data: Up to $1,000,000 for arbitrary code execution with arbitrary entitlements.
  • Access to user request data: Up to $250,000 for unauthorized access outside the PCC trust boundary.
  • Network attack on request data: Up to $150,000 for access to sensitive information through privileged network positions.
  • Unattested code execution: Up to $100,000.
  • Accidental data disclosure: Up to $50,000 for data exposure due to deployment or configuration issues.

Apple will also consider any report of a significant issue that impacts PCC for bounty rewards, even if it doesn’t align with a specific category.
